The answer to this question is often along the lines of,<em> \u201cWe aren\u2019t sure.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a common dilemma \u2014 you want to develop your leaders, so where should you start? But it\u2019s a challenging question to answer without some form of process and frame of reference.<\/p>\n<p>Human capital development is a powerful way to improve your organization and can yield significant results, such as lower turnover and increased performance, but its complexity makes it difficult to execute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To begin the process, you need to have a frame of reference.<\/strong> At CCL, we have one of the largest leadership research databases in the world, based on decades of <a href=\"\/leadership-solutions\/leadership-development-tools\/leadership-assessments\/\">360 assessments<\/a>\u00a0and a rich body of evidence-based science used to accelerate leadership performance.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve extensively studied many <a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/most-important-leadership-competencies\/\">leadership competencies<\/a> \u2014 ranging from strategic planning to self-awareness \u2014 that have strong cause-and-effect relationships to success. (Hint: This is <a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/leadership-gap-what-you-still-need\/\">your leadership gap<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the high-level process we recommend when we\u2019re asked how to develop leaders at an organization:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Identify the dimensions where you will put most of your development work.<\/strong> It helps to separate this process into subcategories of developing self, developing others, and developing the organization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have an initial selection process with key stakeholders to identify which leadership competencies matter most<\/strong>\u00a0at your organization, within these 3 dimensions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implement a process of identifying how your organization currently performs in each competency.<\/strong> We recommend obtaining confidential feedback from stakeholders and <a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/can-people-analytics-revolutionize-change\/\">using your people data<\/a> to gain an accurate understanding and help determine where best to invest in development.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Summarize a plan for development and evaluation. <\/strong>Communicating the plan and\u00a0<a href=\"\/articles\/leading-effectively-articles\/measuring-impact-6-steps\/\">measuring impact<\/a>\u00a0is critical to ensure stakeholder buy-in.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This process is fairly simple, but it requires diligence.
